I always thought that there was only one Mamak in Abu Dhabi. The one in Yas Island. And then we chanced on this one – just in front of One to One Hotel. It’s on the 2nd floor of a closed Adnoc autoserve station. Don’t be daunted by the dirty entrance glass door, from the ground floor it looks abandoned but up you go.. This is called the Mamak Sea Palace branch. Basically they have the same menu as the one in Yas Island. But it is more spacious here and it’s like you own the place whenever you’re here. There are no other food establishments at this place.
For those not familiar, Mamak is an award winning Malaysian restaurant. They have branches in Malaysia and as far as Sydney and Melbourne to name a few. Their “Roti Tissue” “Roti canai” often times referred to as Paratha was a delight. Slightly sweet, fluffy flatbed which easily absorbed the sauces that came with the dish. It’s served with meat or fish curries and you can also ask for dahl. And the sauces oh soooo tasty! I always enjoyed it and their freshly cooked fried chicken. With this meal we’d often just spend about 120dhs good for 3 persons.
But this time I’m trying the Nasi Goreng! I loved the Nasi Goreng Kampung.. with anchovies and morning glory. All flavours wonderfully bursting in your mouth, the smokey fragrance of the fried rice, the crispness of the small fried anchovies, all of it blended together. Simply perfect with the Sotong Goreng, a spicy deep fried squid.
All of these will be best paired with Teh Tarik (Malaysian style tea or sweet karak) 🍵
