The Gift of Bread

A couple of years ago, I was buying some egg pie for mother and father in law at one bakery in Baclaran, Philippines when I saw this old lady with her husband. They looked nearly 90 and the old man looked senile. They had a huge bag with them and was looking confused. She bought one hopia (Chinese pastry) and divided it into 2 and gave the half to her husband.

I saw her feeling the plastic inside as they finished the shared food. I just couldn’t imagine my grandmother or mom like that. So I got them some newly baked bread and the first thing the old lady said was ‘mainit pa’ (still warm) and her eyes lit up with joy as if she hadn’t eaten hot bread for a long time.
